Thomas Atkins, a miner, who worked in the air dip on the 12th January, stated at the inquest that he had a conversation that day with a fireman named Aaron Platt. He said that Platt came into his place just after he had fired a shot in the brake dip and observed "its getting wet yonder". Atkins replied, "It is rather; I think it's time boreholes were started," and Platt replied "Yes it is, lad". Atkins had been in the brake dip the day before and said it was wetter than it had been."
