disaster.
Inscription
from the churchyard of St James, Audley:
Ilmo of Annie Florence beloved daughter of John and Eunice Elsby of Ravens
Lane, Audley born 22/10/1870 died 15/10/1891. He giveth His beloved sleep.
Also John William their son who died 1/3/1894. Also the above John Elsby
who died 14/1/1895 aged 47 years. Also Eunice his beloved wife who died
5/1/1909 aged 59 years. Thy will be done.
By
far the largest number of men lost were from John Elsby's area,
the East 7-foot seam, which probably avoided being flooded
owing to it being at a higher level. Around 40 men would have
been trapped with John, with limited air supply and rising
levels of gas. John was a preacher at the Weslayan Chapel,
Audley.
"Elsby's
lot are done for" - unknown miner, Tuesday, 15th January
1895.
"Those
whose boys are at Elsby's end say "They are with John
Elsby, and we can be satisfied that they die under such circumstances"" The
Sentinel.

John
Guise left five dependent children under 13 behind him in 1895.
Their mother is shown by the Disaster Fund account book to be
Elizabeth Taylor. She certainly received payments as a widow
until her remarriage on 14th April 1907. Their children were:
Emily (22/11/1883), Agnes (2/5/1885), Vincent George (21/12/1888),
Jonathon Guise (21/4/1892), Dorothy Ann Guise (14/2/1894).
It is not clear
whether John Guise and Elizabeth Taylor were ever married, or
how many of Elizabeth's children (if any) were John's.
Notes from
John Guise's great great neice, received with thanks:
"John came from the parish of Linton in Bromyard, Worcestershire.
He was born on Bringsty Common, and christened at Whitbourne
church. On the 1881 census John says he was born
in Nightwood and I think this is Knightwick (where his mother
always said she was born)
on the edge of Whitbourne.
The story I was told by my great aunt (born 1894) who lived with
her aunt (who would be John's sister) was that two of her aunt's
brothers decided that the village was too small for them to be
able to get decent jobs, so they left to seek their fortunes.
One of them was not heard of again. John & his
brother William were the only two children to leave the area
at an early age.
William went to Solihull, near enough to be in touch, especially with his brother
George who moved to Kings Norton after his marriage .John, I believe, went further
afield. In 1881 he was living alone in Bank, Audley. "
John's brothers,
William and George, both moved away from home. George married
Susan Herbert in 1882 in Kings Norton where he was employed as
a metal worker. William moved to Solihull where he worked for
the Birmingham Corporation and died in 1900, aged 53.
John's youngest brother, Herbert, seems to have stayed near home.
He died in Bromyard in 1897, aged just 27.
Thomas
Taylor (seen above in 1891 aged 10, and possibly also
in 1881 listed as Thomas Lightfoot, 4m) also died at Diglake,
as did Ernest Lightfoot.

Although
this name is listed on the Diglake memorial, no-one of this name
