Diglake In Print
The
events at Diglake in January 1895 were widely reported, in both
the local and national press. Other publications, such as the
journal of the Ancient Order of Foresters, of which many of the
victims were members, also carried reports. To follow is an index
of all publications of which I currently have a copy. Click on
the thumbnail to see the full-size image.
I also have
copies of newspaper articles from 1895,
which give day-by-day reports of events at the pit following
the flood. As I have been unable to scan these yet, due to their
size, I have compiled an account of the week beginning Monday
14th January, which you can read here.
A number of
poems were composed following news of the Diglake Disaster, many
of which appeared in local newspapers. Some were even sold to
raise money for the Disaster Fund, which made payments to suport
the widows and children of the victims. A
collection of some of these appears here.
