Victorian Life
What were Victorian homes
like?
We know that they had no electricity - which means no electric lights, no
fridge, no freezer and of course no TV! Gas lights were used in some homes,
and also candelight. And there was no central heating. Fireplaces were the
only source of warmth, and not every room would have one. All cooking would
be done at the wood-burning stove, which would need to be lit each morning.
Washing would take a whole day to do - no electric washing machines, just
wringers and washboards.
Toilets would be outside - chamberpots would have to be used at night.
